Welcome to Christian Care Communities

Enhancing the Journey of Life for Older Adults Since 1884

Christian Care Communities is Kentucky’s largest faith-inspired, non-profit provider of affordable senior living and long-term care for older adults. Founded in 1884, we are dedicated to compassionate care that nurtures the body, mind, and spirit. Our commitment to Faith, Care, and Family is foundational to our work.

A Legacy of Caring that Began with a Mother’s Plea

The year was 1871. A young woman lay dying at Louisville’s City Hospital, her heart heavy with worry for her young son who would soon be alone. At her bedside, she turned to her pastor, William A. Broadhurst, and said, “I have loved the church. It has been my desire to live to raise my boy that I might see him a Christian, but God wills that I must die now. Can I hope some Christian will take my boy? Why have we no home like this, like others?”

Moved by her words, Brother Broadhurst and his wife took the child into their own home, where they, along with the congregation of Floyd and Chestnut Street Church, cared for him. Inspired by this act of compassion, Brother Broadhurst rallied his congregation and set out to create a place that would provide comfort and care for widows and orphans from Christian Churches across Kentucky—a place where they would find not only shelter, but also protection, compassion, and a sense of community.

In May 1884, that dream became a reality when the Christian Church Widows’ and Orphans’ Home of Kentucky opened its doors at 1013 East Jefferson Street in Louisville. Brother Broadhurst wrote of this milestone: “(It) is a fact. Its work is already on record. Hearts have been made happy that were sad in the fearful thought of being homeless and friendless.

This faith-inspired legacy of caring is the foundation from which Christian Care Communities grew.

Today, as Kentucky’s largest faith-inspired provider of senior living, services, and long term care for older adults, Christian Care Communities continues this legacy. Nearly 70 percent of the older adults we serve are unable to afford all the care and services they need. Yet, we remain dedicated to providing care to the often forgotten elderly—offering them a place to call home, compassionate care for those facing declining health, and hope and healing for individuals and families coping with grief, illness, and loneliness. At Christian Care Communities, “enhancing the journey of life” means a steadfast devotion to the care, services, and programs that make a real difference in the quality of life and health of older adults and their families.
