At Christian Care Communities, our Friendship House and Chapel House in the heart of Old Louisville are more than places to live, they are communities rooted in dignity, connection, and compassionate care.
Each day, we serve older adults with supportive housing, spiritual care, and activity-focused programming that engages the mind, body, and spirit. Our mission came to life in a touching way during our recent Sharing the Love gathering, an evening dedicated to celebrating the volunteers who help make our community feel at home.
Over a meal and a slideshow of memories we reflected on the many ways volunteers enrich daily life leading worship, sewing quilts, offering companionship, and sharing their loving hearts. The room grew especially tender as a group from High Calling and Tabernacle of Praise Churches of God in Christ gathered, their table full of conversation and shared memories.
Recognition brought visible emotion to several members, reflecting the meaningful relationships they have cultivated here. Among them was Donna McMillian, an Evangelist who has faithfully volunteered for five years. Donna and her group lead worship every fourth Sunday in our chapel and provide bags of snacks and fresh fruit each time they visit, simple gestures that carry profound care. Reflecting on her service, Donna shared, “The reason we choose to volunteer at Christian Care Communities is the simple fact that we are giving back the love we receive from God.”

Another touching presence was Melvin Spencer and Anita Spencer from West End Church of Christ. Melvin faithfully provides a monthly Bible study, that residents eagerly anticipate, creating meaningful moments of connection and spiritual growth for all who attend. Throughout the evening the two sat side by side, their smiles contagious, their quiet pride reflecting the joy they find in giving back.
Another impactful moment of the evening was hearing from our resident Steve Brunton, who shared, “I think it is important we givebecause we receive so much from God in this life, it’s important to share and pass along.” Through their service, our volunteers show that giving is both an act of faith and a source of abundant blessing, reflecting the love they have received from God.
Jan McDaniel of Friends N Stiches, who has served for 11 years, shared, “The work comes from my heart.” She added that volunteering at Christian Care Communities has brought her purpose, connection, and joy through the relationships she has built with residents and fellow volunteers.
Stories like hers remind us that volunteerism is about service, faith, and the bonds that make our community strong.
We extend heartfelt thanks to our dedicated volunteer partners Friends N Stiches, Immanuel Baptist, West End Church of Christ, High Calling and Tabernacle of Praise Church of God in Christ, and Refuge in Kentucky Church whose ongoing support enriches our community.

We also deeply appreciate our committed staff at Friendship House and Chapel House, especially our chaplain, Jennifer Gingerich, whose compassionate presence helps make gatherings like this truly meaningful.
With a wide range of volunteer opportunities available, there are many ways to share your time and talents and become part of this rewarding work. As Author Jim Rohn once said, “Only by giving are you able to receive more than you already have.”
At Christian Care Communities, this is at the heart of everything we do. Whether it is engaging in activities with our residents, attending a special event, tending to flowers, or joining a worship gathering, there are countless ways to give, connect, and be part of our community, and we would be delighted to have you join us.
