Community Spotlight: Grayson’s Heart in Action

At Christian Care Communities, our Grayson campus is dedicated to serving older adults with compassion, dignity, and a keen sense of community. Offering a full continuum of care, from independent living to more supportive services.

Grayson is a place where residents not only receive quality care, but also find purpose, connection, and opportunities to give back. One of the most meaningful examples of this spirit in action is the beloved on-site thrift store, a resident-led ministry of care that has been serving others since it was founded in 2010 by resident Madge Mills.

Madge, who still calls Grayson home today, planted the seed for what has become a treasured part of community life. While she no longer runs the day-to-day operations, her vision continues to flourish through the dedication of fellow residents who have carried her legacy forward with the same heart for service.

Today, the thrift store is fully operated by resident volunteers who generously give their time, energy, and compassion. Together, they have created more than just a place to shop for our residents, they have built a space rooted in dignity, generosity, and connection.

The store features a wide variety of items, including clothing for all seasons, household essentials, furniture, décor, and unique treasures waiting to be discovered. Every item is thoughtfully donated and carefully organized, creating an inviting and ever-changing shopping experience.

Prices are intentionally kept low, reflecting a shared commitment to making sure everyone both within our community and beyond can find what they need without burden. But what truly sets the Grayson thrift store apart is the heart behind it.

This is not simply a place of transactions; it is a place of transformation. When members of the surrounding Grayson community experience hardship,  the devastating loss of a home , due to fire, our residents stepped in without hesitation to support the family during their loss. Volunteers came together, gathering clothing, furniture, and household items from the store to donate, offering comfort and practical support during tough times.

It is a beautiful reminder that even small acts of kindness, when multiplied, can make a profound difference. Open twice a week, the thrift store has become a hub of fellowship and purpose. Residents not only serve as volunteers but also as neighbors helping neighbors, sharing stories, laughter, and a deep sense of fulfillment through giving back. For many, it provides an opportunity to continue living out a life of service, reinforcing that purpose does not diminish with age it only grows stronger.

We invite you to be part of this meaningful mission.

“Thanks to Madge’s vision and the continued commitment of Grayson residents, the thrift store remains a shining example of compassion in action proving that when a community comes together with generous hearts, the impact reaches far beyond its walls.” – Mary Lynn Spalding, Presdient/CEO
